These days there are many options for travelling and transportation that are readily available to people. It is now possible for almost anyone to buy a plane ticket and take a trip around the world. However, it was not the case around a decade ago. These days however, there are not many people who prefer the rail car as a means of transportation. This is because most people believe this mode of traveling is actually very tiring and also extremely cumbersome. This is because most people are not aware of options and packages.

There are many modes that a person can choose between, based on their destination and budget. In days gone by, the most popular and cost effective way of getting around was by trains. However, considering the fact that all rail cars were built more or less the same, one could easily anticipate the quality and level of service and comfort during a long journey.

The railway industry has come a long way now, with newly developed trains that put quality service, comfort and relaxation before everything else. The services offered include spacious and comfortable seat and bed options, made from good quality fabrics to ensure a smooth ride.

The bunkers of new rail cars are far from the traditional box shaped area, with a hard wooden chair and a flat plank bed. New design cabins and bunkers of some elite rail cars resemble suites from seven-star hotels. These come fitted with over-sized lounge chairs, a television and a fold-out bed as well.

When it comes to meals on board new age rail cars, the traditional one serving a meal of fried eggs and greasy toast has been completely transformed and now, people have the option to choose from a large assortment of dishes. Fast food, continental as well as some exotic dishes are also available on demand from some railway companies. Foods related to the country through which the railway is travelling.

When it comes to price and costs, luxury train travel can cost a little more than traditional railway journeys. The journey by railways is also known to take longer, as compared to taking a flight to destinations that are far away. However, in comparison to airfare this means of travelling is much cheaper, so if you do not have to reach your destination urgently and want to save some money on travelling, then you should definitely try taking a trip by rail car.

Today, travelers with a sense of adventure can enjoy luxury train travel in many places on the planet. The train often is a recreation of elaborate railway cars of past years.

There she goes again. As I try to fall asleep I’m kept awake by the sounds of pigs, chickens and a restless water buffalo scratching under my hut. Yet louder still is the village outcast. This poor woman usually sleeps in the forest, but right now is just meters from my hut. She’s been engaged in a loud and passionate slanging match with her alter ego for hours now. I’d love to know what she is yelling at her imaginary adversary, but my limited Indonesian is no help when she’s communicating in a local dialect. I finally fall asleep only for the usual malaria pill induced nightmares to intrude. Still, in the morning the lady will be singing happily, and I’ll get a first look at why I came to this remote part of West Sumba, Indonesia.

Waking like a half-baked loaf of bread in the morning heat I walk the 1km or so to the beach with only a motley crew of farm animals and a few monkeys for company. I’ve come to surf, and to do so in one of the increasingly rare spots where there’s barely a handful of like-minded people to share the waves with. I’ve heard that the beach here is amazing, and it does not disappoint. It’s by far the most spectacular clash of sand and saltwater I’ve ever seen, and with only a few fishermen for company. Places like this do still exist, I think to myself as I jog back to get my board. This place would easily top even the most pretentious list of ‘top ten beaches,’ if more people actually knew it existed, or if it wasn’t such a mission to get here in the first place.

There’s not much to the village here. Just some very basic and broken huts for guests (my first foot in the door of my hut went through the floor), a small shop and a few rice paddies. With only a few hours of fickle electricity a day and basic food (chopped liver and rice, yes, more thanks) time here is not all fun in paradise. There’s no cold beer or the Sky Garden (a club in Bali) to pass time. I spend the next few weeks in a battle with a pig that wakes me up screeching every morning at 4.30am on the dot, malaria-carrying mosquitoes and plain old boredom. Some hills nearby look like a fun hike; but only for the insane. The heat during the day stifles any thoughts of activity outside the ocean. After the first week I start to lose it a little and make friends with a coconut. His name was Kevin. If that sounds weird and unoriginal it’s because it was, but I’ll blame it on lack of company and the malaria pills.

The locals here are friendly and always curious of visitors. My curiosity of them was every bit as strong. Sumba is a place full of ancient tradition and superstition and just the odd bit of black magic. While many people have converted to Christianity, and Islam is prevalent in some parts of the island, Animism or ‘The Marapu’ is a local belief system still found everywhere. It loosely involves worshiping everything from trees to crocodiles. At another local village (with no road access) there were some examples of tombs with each person’s worship animal carved on the gravestone, that I was told were worth checking out. Getting around some of the villages to see this was an exercise in the surreal. I was warned several times that there were ‘invisible gates’ that I was not allowed to pass through, these structures forming part of local spiritual beliefs which date back to more than 500 BC. Safe to say I never did find their exact location.

Aside from religion, people here are still known to settle disputes via the machete, rusty and dull, which the men carry everywhere. It’s a fascinating place with more than a hint of the mysterious and unknown about it.

After a few weeks of great surf I’m ready to leave. I sit on the beach on my last day feeling pretty happy and more than lucky about my little place in the world. Places like this still do exist, I get to see it and I get to leave. Boarding the truck for 6 hours of bumpy and noisy hell back to town, the village outcast is singing again. I hope she finds her peace, like I’d just found mine (and a coconut named Kevin).

London travel is exciting for tourists as there are many sites to see and things to do in this historical city. But if you plan on traveling to London, you better map out your destinations carefully as there is a lot to see. Whether you’re looking for nightlife, history, or gardens you are sure to find it in London.

London is home to 200 galleries, 300 museums and over 150 events that happen every day so they are sure to be enough to keep you busy on your London trip. You might visit the Tate Museum after breakfast, pop over to Kensington Palace for lunch, and check out the display of Crown jewels at the Tower of London after supper.

If you’re into history, then Westminster Abbey is sure to be at the top of your list. Here, not only will you find great architecture, but you’ll also be able to see where many of the famous people in history are interred. This working church which performs services for all denominations is the final resting place of many kings and poets as well as scientists including Henry III and Isaac Newton.

Don’t forget to include a visit to some of the many beautiful parks in your London travel itinerary. Regents, Hyde Park and St. James offer gorgeous trails and gardens in addition to outdoor activities such as soccer, model sail boating and tennis to name but a few. Also you want to pencil in a stop at the Japanese gardens at Holland Park and, of course, Kensington Gardens next to Kensington Palace.

Another garden you want to visit which really isn’t a garden at all is Covent Garden. Here you will find a wide array of shops and theaters along with entertaining street performers, pubs and restaurants. Covent Garden is home to the Royal Opera House along with great shopping and dining.

You also want to visit London’s famous outdoor markets such as Portobello Road where you can haggle over antiques just as they did centuries ago. Borough market has been a popular trading place for thousands of years and has the atmosphere of a Moroccan bazaar complete with interesting and unusual foods.

London’s West End, is home to many different pubs and restaurants where you can find anything to suit your palate and pocketbook. While you’re there, don’t forget to take in one of the many shows or performances which are said to rival those on Broadway.

No one would travel to London without visiting one of the museums and you’ll sure have plenty to choose from. From science museums to natural history museums, you be able to see personal items at the Victoria and Albert Museum and of course visit the world-famous British Museum. They’re interesting sites to see also in the museums that the Tower of London and Kensington Palace.

Budget travel has become a necessity for most people with the cost of gasoline and other consumer products on the rise. But when we start considering when, where, how and what type of vacation to undertake, we sometimes get caught up in the anticipation and excitement of the upcoming trip and let the more important financial side of things slip a little. After all, for most of us, taking a vacation may only happen once a year and for some, even more infrequently, so we tend to indulge and forget about our pocket book a little.

There are many ways to save money, avoid unnecessary cost, ensure you take care of details end up a smart and perceptive traveler. Travel planning is easier that you might think and here are eight great budget travel tips for making your travel dollar go further!

1. Cushion your budget – When considering a trip or planning budget travel, it is important to plan for the unexpected and consider the financial side of things early on. This ensures affordability, liquidity and having the resources to enjoy it to the fullest! Plan for the worst-case financial scenario and prepare for things to cost a little more than you expected. Allow up to 20% increase in cost to be on the safe side of things.

2. Emergency money: Carrying some spare cash somewhere can also be a lifesaver. The rule of thumb seems to be around $50-$100 in small bills. This can be used for incidentals, ground-transportation like cab fare and/or your return home, tips and more.

3. Set your priorities: Set some budget travel spending priorities and criteria in advance, like eating at a special restaurant or attending a concert, even if this means sacrificing a bit on lodgings or visa versa, depending on what is more important to you.

4. Keep an eye on your credit cards: It is extremely easy these days to have access to your financial resources through ATM’s and credit cards. Just remember that it is just as easy to overspend because of it being so readily available. A little discipline will go a long way to protect your financial interest and help you stick to your travel budget.

5. Maximize gas mileage and efficiency: If you’re planning a road trip, make sure that your car has been serviced at least a week before your trip. A well-maintained vehicle will go a long way to ensure carefree driving. If your budget allows, you may consider renting a vehicle to save wear and tear on your own. Small economy cars are better on gas and are much more comfortable than they used to be. Minivans and sport utility vehicles are practical only if you have to transport a large family with a lot of equipment or luggage.

6. Gas fill-ups: For filling up your car en route, avoid pushing to the limit until the gas runs out. Gas will obviously be more expensive when filling up in remote locations. If you miscalculated and the light on the dashboard indicates that you are really in need, opt for filling just half a tank until you reach the next more densely or major populated destination, where gas might be a little cheaper.

7. Pack-a-snack: Bring your own refreshments and snacks. Gas station prices on drinks and snack food are high. Avoid these during a pit stop, if you are counting your budget travel dollars. A cooler packed with lots of cool drinks, water and ice and/or a thermos of coffee or hot water for tea, some fruit, granola bars, or a sandwich, goes a long way to still the hunger and save you money by avoiding all high priced stops en route.

8. Travel necessities: It is advisable to travel with basic necessities, like a cell phone and a first aid kit, since both can prove to be essential in emergencies. Most people have cell phones at their disposal, but in the event that you are not one of them, a prepaid cell phone may be the answer for your trip. The peace of mind it offers is worth the small investment. Cell phones can also save on hefty surcharges and higher long distance rates that hotels and resorts often charge.

Budget travel requires close attention to all things financial before and during your trip. Planning a trip or vacation can be a little time consuming but following these travel tips will hopefully save you a lot of headaches as well as some unnecessary interest charges on your credit card balances later! You will thank yourself for your fiscal restraint and spending discipline, upfront planning, foresight and forward thinking!

Rome is a magical place! A City that has the present and the past elegantly standing shoulder to shoulder and of course that makes Rome a perfect destination for any visitor.

Whether you have your heart set on ticking off the famous sights one by one or you are just planning to put your feet up and rest, Rome is the ideal location.

Be warned though, it has to be said that in the middle of summer the heat in Rome is fierce! But then there is always an icy fountain to dip your feet into and then close by an awning of a street café so that you can sit in the shade while you sip the icy cold local delicate beer and do what the Romans do and watch and enjoy the passers-by.

If your stay is short–and 45% of all visitor trips to Rome are for less than four days–then here is a very brief list of the places you must see:

The Vatican and St Peter’s Square. The Vatican is at the north corner of the enormous St Peter’s Square, which is great because you will be able to take in two of the most famous places in the world in one go.

The Vatican is not the biggest place in the world but it has so many reasons to be one of the world’s most famous places. It is built on the Tomb of St Peter and is the smallest state in the World and better still it is also very, very beautiful, from the shock of artistic genius in the Sistine Chapel to the wonderful Gardens and Water Features the Vatican as a tourist attraction it has few, if any peers.

Other places not to miss in Rome include the beautiful Trevi Fountain made famous by the divine movie Roman Holiday, the Fountain stands at the end of the Roman Aqua Virgo aqueduct which was built in the 19 BC and everyone know the legend that says that if you throw a coin into the fountain you are promised that you will return to Rome.

Another place not to miss is a building which boasts a very bizarre history The Castel Sant’ Angelo which was built as the Mausoleum for the Roman Emperor Hadrian but rather oddly has also been a residence for Popes and a Prison, though it has to be said not at the same time.

If you tend to believe that the coins that you have tossed into the Trevi Fountain are not going to work, do try not to miss the Spanish Steps, and most important of all Rome’s monuments the unbelievable Colosseum (full ticket entrance for this year 15.50 Euros or around $22.5) which was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian One Thousand and Thirty Nine Years Ago, yes 1937 years ago it has to be written in words to be believed, actually just like Rome!

There are dozens of ways of travelling to Rome, if you are already in Europe then car or train will take you easily into the heart of this marvellous City, though watch out for traffic jams, these are actually best viewed from the sidewalk where you can enjoy the Roman’s amusing impatience and love of using their auto’s horns.

If you are coming from further afield then the busy airport is easily reached, but and it is a big one, make sure that you have an hotel booked before you travel.

Rome is a year round tourist attraction and it is amazing just how full the hotels are year round. With this in mind it is a good idea to compare prices not only between hotels but between booking services and for that it is a great idea to use an hotel price comparison websites.

If you are travelling with a guide, you have an advantage over the individuals who choose to go it alone. While everyone prefers different types of travel, it’s worthwhile to try escorted tours at least once. Traveling with a guide has a number of benefits that you can’t foresee until you give it a shot.

Kiss Lines Good-Bye

One of the major advantages of traveling with a guide is you can often get through lines that would otherwise involve waiting for several hours. This allows you to see more of the city you’re in and not spend hours at a time wishing that you’d brought something to do.

Learn More

Escorted tours are expensive for a reason: they’re way more informational. When you go through a building, such as the Vatican in Vatican City, Italy or the Chateau de Versailles outside of Paris, France, with a guide, you can see rooms that people without a guide can’t access. The guides also know about the art, the decorations and the history of the building and everything you’re seeing. And they’ll be sharing it with you. If you were to go it alone, you might be able to borrow a headset and listen to a rote description of an object, but you’d miss a lot of information that you can glean with someone who knows what they’re doing.

Skip the Tourist Traps

When you travel, you quickly learn that there are two types of tourist attractions: Things you should see because they’re worth your time, money and energy and those that you skip. When you travel with a guide, you don’t need to limit your options to only the most popular attractions. Instead, a guide can lead you through the city expertly, pointing out over-priced shopping centres, attractions that cost more than they’re worth, while guiding you to the things that you really shouldn’t miss.

Find Something Unexpected

One of the most advantageous parts of traveling with a guide is that you get to find things that you would never see otherwise. The farmer’s market just outside of town. The cozy cafe that only locals know about. The delicious restaurant where the food is so juicy, amazing and well-priced it’s amazing that it’s not starred on the map. Except it’s hidden by winding streets that seem to lead nowhere in particular and without a guide, you never would have found it.

Negotiate a Deal

A tour guide can negotiate prices on your behalf. They can make sure you’re paying what’s reasonable and you get the best possible price.

Participating in escorted tours is well worth every cent. Explore a new city or an old city and be amazed by all that you’ve missed.
